Confession: I was mainly raised in a proud Dutch household (my ancestry is a wide range of Northwestern Europe). Although the culture was willingly diluted with a strong loyalty to our Canadian identity, a residue was left on me.
I recently came across chocolate sprinkles that reminded me of a specific childhood snack. I’m not in contact with that part of my family, and felt a bit homesick. Upon some research, I found a Dutch store a few cities over. I went there today.
I found a couple things that mean a lot to me, but most importantly I found the mints my Oma would keep in her purse, stacked in an old orange pill bottle. “See, they fit perfectly,” she’d say.
I will do the same with mine.
