Day 283

Confession: A lovely person captured this moment. It’s cliche to say, but this is where you’ll find me at parties.

It’s not that I want to be alone, off to the side with an animal. And I don’t always like every animal.

But I get confused in large groups of people, especially when I’m not known or there’s noise.  I can’t follow conversations, I don’t know how to connect without feeling like I’m oversharing, I get triggered or in my head. It feels like a lot of work.

With an animal, language is familiar. It’s a similar feeling I get when with children. An honesty that isn’t complicated. A connection that comes and goes and comes around again.

I once stepped away from a group dinner to walk down a hill, into a barn, to sit with the horses. Someone came looking for me later, worried about cougars. But I was watching the cows move across the dirt holding pen, sun setting over the hills.
