Confession: When I was in Grade 8 (13 years old) I’d march around my neighbourhood with my friend holding up anti-animal testing signs. Someone drove by and called us losers or something.
We weren’t losers but we did put an anti-animal testing ad in the middle of our Math presentation…
I care deeply about animal welfare, and for a while I tried being vegan, but I’m not vegan anymore. I found it didn’t cover all my ethics. I knew vegans who ate food that contributed to labour exploitation or used products that were tested on animals. I also knew people who ate meat but cried and turned away anytime you mentioned the cow dying.
Hypocrisy is my nemesis. I eat meat because I’ve seen animals die and I’ve eaten farm animals that had a name. I’ve put down animals and I’ve saved animals. I’m against factory farming and avoid buying it. I care about fair trade and organic incentives. I care about proper wages and combating slavery. I’m against fast fashion and consumerism.
This list could go on and on. My point is, I’m never going to fix everything and every world issue quite literally cannot be my issue. So I focus on not being a damn hypocrite.
