Confession: One summer I lived in a place where moths, and other bugs, were physically taken over. I would find dozens laying on my doormat, most dead but a few unfortunate still living—their bodies moving slow, robotic and disturbing.
I wanted to put them out of their misery but though maybe they were only stunned from flying into a light. But I’d keep the outdoor lights off and still wake up to more on my doormat. Day after day, I would study the victims in horror and research online, but couldnt find any answers.
Then I saw it; a bunch of micro-bugs scurry under my mat. I lifted it and found a small army of god knows what. My only guess is they’d crawl inside the moths and crickets, into their brains. But I don’t know, I’ve still never found answers or experienced it anywhere else. Unrealistically I sometimes I think it was a bad omen of that house.
There was no way to stop nature, so I decided to start collecting some of the bodies. Years later I still have them somewhere in a bin in the back of my pickup truck. My plan was to make resin jewelery, to do right by them. But I think deep down I also cared about potential profit, so I haven’t touched them.
