Confession: During the first part of highschool I was in an unhinged—but wholesome—group of guys (one of them I’ve known since elementary and is still a good friend of mine).
We hopped fences going yard to yard, as a means of travel. One night we jumped on a stranger’s trampoline until they set a dog on us. We’d climb onto a school roof. Some climbed a barn silo while the rest of us watched. We’d pee in homes under construction (really sorry about this one). And we played nicky nicky nine doors—a game where you knock on a door, ring the bell, and run away before anyone answers.
I do for a moment want to brag that while the group argued quietly amongst themselves about who was going to go knock, I slithered away and a DING DONG immediately followed. I sprinted past my confused group of comrades and heard cursing in all directions as they scattered.
No, we didn’t live in a small town. And many of us came from broken homes. We either became assholes or addicts or got caught up in crime. But damn, that was peak highschool for me. We stopped being friends during, then reconnected after graduation. I don’t know where many are at anymore but I’m proud of where some of us are now. And I owe a lot of my humor to them.
