Day 341

Confession: Once during my childhood, while I was alone in my room, I heard a scream and the sound of a door slam. I quickly looked out my window and saw a white van speed away.

Years later, while my friends and I were out in the evening doing harmless teenage things around a neighbourhood, we heard a scream and saw a van pull away. We took off after it. I wasn’t fast, but my buddies sure were, and the van stopped. I can’t remember how it unfolded, but we were informed it was for filming, and they had sent out flyers to all the homes. They had proof and we all relaxed.

I wish I could relax about the first encounter.  Maybe it was a prank or harmless in some other way. I won’t know but it was one of my earliest memories of crime amongst strangers, and standing there helpless I felt another layer of innocence stripped away.
