Confession: I have a lot of marks on my body, many of them are tattoos. I got my first one when I was 18. Then continued to get as many as I could. During 2020 covid lockdowns I learned how to handpoke tattoo professionally, and practiced on myself.
I regret a lot of my tattoos. Not all. But many. Because I got them as protection. I look young for my age and in my early twenties that really worked against me. I was vulnerable and around awful shit, and tattoos showed I had autonomy and money (even though I had neither).
People comment on my tattoos often when they’re visible, complimenting me and I’m proud of the story my body art carries. But my tattoos have also ruined a lot of work opportunities for me and opened the door to stigma. There are a few I’d like to have removed, and there are a few I would get again if I had the chance to go back. The rest are irrelevant.
